Amidst growing tension following the potential overturn of the Roe V. Wade judgment, several woke Hollywood stars reacted to the ongoing debate.
On Friday, The New York Times published a full-page ad featuring dozens of artists and influencers advocating for reproductive freedom, including abortion rights. Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, and more come out in support of Roe V. Wade.
As per a report from People, singers, actors and young social media influencers voiced their support for Roe by participating in a full-page ad in The New York Times denouncing the decision to overturn the historic judgement. Some of the notable celebrities apart from Ariana Grande, Shawn Medes and Selena Gomez are Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Kendall Jenner, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, Halsey, Hailey Bieber, and more.
They oppose the Supreme Court’s plan to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the U.S. constitutional right to an abortion, laid out in a recent leaked draft opinion. The majority opinion for Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization indicated the court will uphold Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban and overrule its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.
This action by the court would end the constitutional right to kill unwanted children before they are born and activate so-called trigger laws in 26 states that would ban or restrict abortion access.
In response, Planned Parenthood, the nation’s number one abortion provider, has launched a “Bans Off Our Bodies” campaign to oppose the Supreme Court’s expected decision and pro-life laws. The New York Times ad is part of that campaign.
The ad states:
“Our power to plan our own futures and control our own bodies depends on our ability to access sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion,”
“We are Artists. Creators. Storytellers. We are the new generation stepping into our power. Now we are being robbed of our power. We will not go back — and we will not back down.”
Here’s what Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson said in a statement:
“These young artists are encouraging their fans to join them in speaking out in support of the right to access sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion.”
“What we see in young people from all walks of life is that they aren’t backing down — not today, not ever. Like the artists who signed on to this ad, their resolve to keep bans off their bodies is a source of hope during a dark time, and we are determined to keep fighting alongside them, for them,” she added.
