Three-hundred teachers have registered for a free concealed carry course, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.

The controversial sheriff announced that he would cover the cost for county educators to take a concealed carry class. After receiving 300 requests, the sheriff said the limit had been reached for the class.

Class dates and times have not been announced.

“People in the schools need to be trained with firearms, period,” Jones, who is known for being outspoken, said. “Even if you hate guns, you need to know about guns if you’re in the schools.”

Jones said guns are being taken from schools every single day. He said the eight-hour CCW class will educate teachers.

“We’re going to talk about school shootings. We’re going to talk about the different types of guns, and we’re going to make it a very interesting and very thoughtful class,” Jones said.

Jones said a CCW license is just part of the solution, and he also plans on again pushing districts to allow teachers to carry.

Right now in Butler County, the Edgewood School District is the only one that allows certain administrators to be armed.
