The topic of gun control has reverberated throughout the country again since the latest tragedy. As you might expect, classroom conversations have been all about the topic, but at least one conversation lately might not be about what you’d expect. An investigation was opened on a student after police were called to a high school. The reason? A rudimentary mathematical symbol that somehow resembled a gun.

According to the Maimi Herrold, a full-blown conversation then took place between the students in the class. Somehow the conversation was misinterpreted, and the student was subsequently investigated for making terroristic threats.
Police searched the student’s home looking for firearms or any plans to hurt other students. Authorities found nothing that looked out of the ordinary. There were no firearms in the home at all.
“The student used extremely poor judgment in making the comment, but in light of the actual circumstances, there was clearly no evidence to support criminal charges,” law enforcement wrote in a statement after their investigation.
Shockingly, the student still faces the possibility of expulsion, according to the Washington Times.The school reportedly has a protocol that students are not allowed to talk about guns at school.
Students who speak, or are accused of speaking about guns at school, will subsequently be investigated by the school board, the local police department, and the district attorney.
If the incident happens again, Superintendent Michael Doucet listed the following action in a recent interview.
“The first thing we’re going to do is remove that student from the premises with proper authority. Then, we’re going to have a home visit done by detectives of the sheriff’s department, and if no charges are filed, we’re going to conduct a threat assessment on the student,” he said.
The investigation came after 17 people were killed after 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz stormed the school with multiple firearms. The shooting sparked conversations about gun reform in America.
Many of the surviving students who were present during the shooting have led the charge to limit the ability to purchase a firearm.
In wake of the shooting, Florida’s Governor, Rick Scott, agreed to pass a state law requiring an individual to be 21 years or older in order to purchase any firearm. Previously, the state required a buyer be 18 years old to purchase a firearm.
