Race car driver Danica Patrick had a message for Americans everywhere on the 16-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Danica Sue Patrick is an American professional stock car racing driver, model, and advertising spokeswoman.

Patrick posted a photo of the American flag with the following caption:

I have always loved the American flag. I remember having a Wilson leather jacket with the flag covering the back. I had an America flag swim suit. I have a tattoo of an American flag on my back. …….I am a patriot. 9/11 was a day that tested our country. I had just come home from living in England for 3 years and I remember feeling more proud than ever to be an American. I want to come together everyday as human beings seeking love and peace, without tragedy. #neverforget

September 11, 2001 marked one of the darkest hours in American history. 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.
