Two women entered a busy marketplace in Maiduguri, Nigeria fully equipped with suicide vests, hoping to maximize casualties.
One woman was able to set hers off successfully, but the second one’s malfunctioned. The crowd then set upon her and viciously beat her to death. It is suspected that she was acting in the interests of Boko Haram.
The attack could have been meant as revenge for the recent raid on the main camp of Boko Haram and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that the government had eradicated Boko Harem. Maiduguri has been a main target for Boko Haram with suicide bombers and trucks loaded with explosives. It’s no wonder the citizens set upon this woman who would have gladly murdered them.
Buhari said of that attack:
“I was told by the Chief of Army Staff that the Camp fell at about 1:35 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, and that the terrorists are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide. I urge you to maintain the tempo by pursuing them and bringing them to justice.”
From The Conservative Tribune:
Some suspect that the woman was actually a not bomber, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, News.com.au reported.
“It seems doubtful the girl was actually a bomber as she did not detonate any explosives when she was attacked,” Police Deputy Superintendent Mohammad Haruna told the website. He claimed instead that she was a victim of “mob action carried out by an irate crowd.”
It is highly unlikely that this woman was anything other than an attacker stopped cold in her tracks, first by faulty equipment and then by a crowd of her intended victims.
