A mother was shaken after a group of black youths attacked her car with her two children inside near the University of Chicago campus. What terrified her more is the group hurled racial epithets at her because she is white.

Susan Pedersen says she was left shaken and fearful in the wake of the incident that took place near the University of Chicago campus Thursday night. The mother of two says her son and daughter were hit with broken glass and her car was left dented after several dozen African-American teens surrounded her vehicle and began kicking and shaking it.

Pedersen had dropped off a friend at the University of Chicago campus when she stopped at a red light at the intersection of 60th Street and King Drive at around 9 pm Thursday.

“They were walking on both sides of the vehicle – in the front, in the back – and as they were walking across, they were hitting my car, using racial slurs and telling me that I didn’t belong in their neighborhood because I was white,” Pedersen said.

Pedersen said one person was on a bicycle, which the group used it as a battering ram to shatter the back window. The broken glass left cuts on her 3-year-old son, Benjamin.

The alleged attack ended as abruptly as it began when a passing police car pulled up to the scene, sending the teens fleeing.

After the attack, a police spokesperson revealed that two juveniles have been arrested and been charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property, and then the case has been closed.

The names and ages of the suspects are not being released because they are juveniles.

However, Pedersen said several dozen people were involved in the attack that left her two children covered in broken glass. They were in the back seat of the vehicle, which was left dented with the rear glass shattered.

She said she is not satisfied with that outcome considering what she described as the racially charged nature of the attack.

“This is something that’s going to stay with me for the rest of my life,” she said.
