Man ‘Accidentally’ Stabs Pregnant Girlfriend 30 Times

BRONX, NY — A man who was charged on Tuesday with stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, a U.S. Army veteran, multiple times and killing their unborn daughter claimed that the frenzied attack was an accident, according to police.

Oscar Alvarez, 30, was charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, assault, and weapons possession after attacking Liv Abreu, 30.

The New York Daily News reported that Alvarez allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, who was 26 weeks pregnant, a total of seven times. Other sources report that she was stabbed as many as 30 times, all in the torso area.

Abreu, who served in Afghanistan as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, crawled to a neighbor’s apartment to ask for help, and she was taken to Lincoln Hospital.

Abreu later lost her baby — but according to her family, she is expected to make a full physical recovery. The victim’s brother, Juan Carlos Abreu, said, “The physical wounds will heal. The mental wounds will also heal at some point, but it will probably take longer. She’s positive. My sister, she’s a warrior.”

Police said Alvarez and Abreu got into a heated argument at around 12.30 A.M. because he believed that she was cheating on him. According to police, an enraged Alvarez grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed his girlfriend. Following the attack he put on a clean shirt, took her cell phone and keys, and walked out of the apartment.

Instead of calling for help, police say that Alvarez left his girlfriend bleeding and fled the scene in Abreu’s 2004 Jeep Cherokee SUV, according to the New York Daily News.  He later abandoned the car and turned himself at around 4 A.M.

Alvarez first claimed that stabbing his girlfriend had been an accident. He later asked for a lawyer. Alvarez’s Legal Aid lawyer pointed out that his client had no criminal history.
