CALIFORNIA CITY VOTING TO BACK TRUMP AND DEFY SANCTUARY STATE LAW

THE CITY COUNCIL OF LOS ALAMITOS, IN ORANGE COUNTY, WILL BE VOTING ON MONDAY ON WHETHER TO IGNORE THE STATE’S SANCTUARY LAWS.

VIA| Steven Ahle The vote will determine whether or not to honor SB 54, also known as the California Values Act. The federal government is currently suing California over three laws they passed in an effort to overturn federal law and the United States Constitution.

The law that Los Alamitos is the one that prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with federal authorities against illegal aliens. But Los Alamitos has decided not to wait to see what the courts will rule and instead are voting whether to reject state law.



Ironically, the state of California would have to argue that state laws override federal laws while at the same time arguing that cities accept their laws over their own.

The state law, which took effect Jan. 1, “may be in direct conflict with federal laws and the Constitution of the United States,” reads the proposed local law.

Stating that council members have taken an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution, the ordinance says the council “finds that it is impossible to honor our oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States” and at the same time be in compliance with the new state law.

Supporters of the proposed law in Los Alamitos claim that since their city officials swore an oath to obey the laws of the United States and the constitution, they have no other choice.

Critics say that the new laws do not conflict with the constitution, but most legal scholars from both sides agree that 2 of the 3 laws will definitely be struck down and the third is suspect at best.
