A cashier at an Indianapolis Marsh store is receiving praised after she showed amazing generosity to an elderly shopper.
A Marsh store cashier named Janell is getting tons of admiration on Facebook for paying part of a customer’s purchases when the customer was unable to.
Gary Clark, another shopper, was buying groceries at the Marsh on Kentucky Avenue when he noticed an elderly woman in line in front of him.
After the cashier finished ringing her up, the woman realized she didn’t have enough money to pay for all of the items so the kindhearted cashier took money out of her own pocket to pay for half of the woman’s groceries.
The woman kept on telling Janell she didn’t have to help pay, but Janell said, “You come through my line all the time, and I want to help. I had a good week.”
Clark later posted the photo on Facebook with a caption: “This girl is a cashier at Marsh on Kentucky Ave, her name is Janell. An elderly woman came through her line, did not have enough money. This young lady took money out of her own pocket and paid half of her bill. Please share and let everyone know our youth is not a lost cause. I was proud to witness it, Marsh should be proud to have her as an employee.”
The post quickly went viral, garnering more than 26,000 shares in just one week.
“She [the woman] was adamant on saying I didn’t have to, but at the same time I felt as if it was necessary because I didn’t want her to go hungry,” Janell explained the situation to the news outlet.
“To be honest, I don’t make a lot here, but, to me, money is just a material item and I don’t need material goods to be happy,” she continued. “Seeing others smile and seeing them happy is what makes me happy.”
“She’s really a good, good person. She has a good soul. She has a like a beautiful soul. She really does,” customer Terri Dunning said of Bryant.
David Palmer, Marsh’s SVP of Marketing and Advertising said, “Marsh is proud to be local and part of the community. Our primary focus is service to our customers, and we are very proud to have an employee like Janell whose actions demonstrate a commitment to those values.”
