A father in Florida is being credited with thwarting an attempted kidnapping of his 17-year-old daughter, firing shots as four teen suspects tried to break into his garage, police said.
An investigation revealed that the teens believed the father to be wealthy and had hatched a plot to rob his house and kidnap his daughter, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible home-invasion robbery in progress at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Baker. The 51-year-old homeowner told authorities his daughter had called him to say that someone tried to block the roads to their home with barrels — an apparent attempt to force her to exit her car and walk.
“A short time later her father heard his dogs barking and saw his front motion-activated flood lights come on,” the statement continued. “He also heard what sounded like his car door closing and went to get his gun.”
He saw some people trying to force their way into his garage and fired three shots, sending the would-be intruders scurrying into the woods, police said.
Authorities acting on a tip from a neighbor later caught up with the suspects in a 2016 white Jeep Liberty. They were identified as Keilon Johnson, 19, Austin French, 17, Tyree Johnson, 16, and Kamauri Horn, 15. The four suspects, all of Crestview, were charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted home invasion robbery.
Amber’s funeral director father Terry Brackney heard the commotion, grabbed his gun and ran outside to find a group of teens trying to force their way into his garage.
Cops believe the teens had ‘concocted a plan to kidnap the teenage daughter’ by trying to force her to leave her car to move the barrels, so they could grab her.
Mr. Brackney, 51, opened fire on the group who fled into the woods, according to Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. He later discovered they had been unscrewing some of his security lights, possibly for a second kidnap attempt.
A neighbor, who witnessed a ‘suspicious car’ fleeing from the scene, called the cops who stopped the 2016 White Jeep Liberty on Highway 4 and made a felony traffic stop.
Inside they found Keilon Johnson, 19, Austin French, 17, 16-year old Tyree Johnson, and 15-year old Kamauri Horn, along with a knife, guns and a roll of tape.
In a statement, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said: ‘The goal was to first force her out of her car by blocking the road with barrels and garbage cans.
(However, their intended victim drove around the barrels and kept going.)
‘They then planned to head to her house, confront and subdue her father – who they believed to be wealthy – and rob the home.’
All four defendants are now charged with attempted kidnapping and attempted home invasion robbery. Johnson was booked into the Okaloosa County Jail while the others are being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice facility.
The home where the attempted abduction took place is valued $400,000 on Zillow. But photos on Brackney’s social media profiles show him redesigning the interior. He runs the family-owned Brackney Funeral Service.
