President Trump Expects to Fill SCOTUS Seat Vacated By a Surprise Liberal Resignation
President Trump expects to fill three more seats on the Supreme Court before he leaves office to go with his popular choice of Neil Gorsuch. Anthony Kennedy is expected to resign and no one is sure how much longer Ruth Bader Ginsburg can hold on. But the third seat he expects to fill is a shocker if it happens because no one has said anything about this liberal judge stepping down. I have to admit that I wasn’t aware of this possibility.
The fourth seat Trump is anticipating filling is the seat currently held by Sonia Sotomayor because of health problems associated with Type 1 diabetes. Should Trump be right about filling four seats with young conservative judges, it would possibly be decades before their stranglehold could be broken. Currently, there are four conservatives and four liberals and Anthony Kennedy is a swing vote. That would change to 7 conservative judges and just 2 liberals.
Asked by the source who the other vacancies would be, Trump said Ginsburg’s seat is likely to become vacant. “What does she weigh? 60 pounds?” Trump told the source.
Asked who the fourth vacant seat would be, Trump replied “Sotomayor,” referring to the first justice nominated by former President Barack Obama. At 63, Sotomayor is rarely mentioned as a pending vacant seat on the court.
But Trump believes that her longtime struggle with type-1 diabetes imperils her future on the court. “Her health,” Trump said. “No good. Diabetes,” Trump reportedly said.
Sotomayor has discussed her fight against diabetes and how she copes with the disease on a daily basis. “It wasn’t so bad, but it was still bad,” Sotomayor said during a meeting of diabetic children in 2011. “It was still something that I had to deal with, grow up with and figure out how to live with.”
