A mother has spoken of the moment she woke up in the middle of the night to find her 11-month-old daughter missing.
The 25-year-old mother was sleeping in a tent with her daughter, 4-year-old son and husband on a building site in Delhi, India, when the kidnapping took place, reported Daily Mail.
The 27-year-old father works as a laborer, but because he earns around $3 per day, the family could not afford a more secure accommodation.
“We shouted for help,” the mother told the Daily Mail. “I was shouting so loudly I woke everyone up in nearby tents and everyone started looking for my daughter. I was crying for help.”
Other laborers helped look for the girl, but it was only when police arrived that the baby was discovered in the nearby jungle.
The 11-month-old had been raped, suffered severe injuries and was bleeding profusely.
Authorities later arrested 42-year-old Vijay Singh for the crime.
“We didn’t expect this,” the girl’s mother said. “We were at peace. I thought we were safe. We all work together. It’s nice. We didn’t expect that something like this could happen. We didn’t do anything wrong, didn’t fight with anyone. I felt completely helpless.”
Singh allegedly admitted to raping the infant for nearly two hours.
After recovering the baby, police took her to a local hospital where she received stitches and other treatment.
“When I saw the police holding my baby I was shocked, I couldn’t speak,” the mother added. “I was numb. I was crying. How did it happen?”
She and her husband fear their daughter could face long-term health consequences as a result of the abuse.
“We do not want to stay here now,” the father added. “We’ll go somewhere else. But right now, we cannot make any decisions, we are too shocked. We have to keep working and earning money but we are too devastated to think clearly.”
Only a few days earlier, police arrested a 42-year-old piano teacher in Delhi after he was accused of raping a 7-year-old girl who was taking lessons with him.
Ravi Kumar used to lock the door from the inside in the room where he conducted his piano lessons and raped the girl. The parents only found out about it when the girl told them she no longer wanted to learn the piano and began crying, India Today reported.
