Share X Facebook Email

What happened: The Gateway Pundit, publishing a report by Michael Schwarz of The Western Journal, says Salon announced Thursday that it will cease publication after 31 years, citing a farewell message from the outlet.

Salon says its model is “no longer sustainable”

According to the report, Salon’s goodbye message said, “The business realities of independent digital journalism have changed profoundly over the years.” It added, “After careful consideration, we have reached the difficult decision that our publishing model is no longer sustainable. We know this news will be deeply disappointing to many of you, and we share that sadness.”

Old Salon headlines resurface on X

The Gateway Pundit notes that users on X began circulating past Salon headlines. Examples cited include a 2013 headline, “’The Legend of Zelda’ is classist, sexist and racist,” with a subhead, “The beloved game takes a dim view of workers, people of color and women.”

Another widely shared example cited in the report is a 2015 opinion headline: “I’m a pedophile, but not a monster.”

Commentary also referenced a 2015 headline shared by Melissa Chen of The Spectator: “White men must be stopped: The very future of mankind depends on it. For 500 years, they’ve exploited their fellow man and plundered the planet. It’s time they rein themselves in.”

What users said

The report attributes reactions to named accounts on X. Kangmin Lee shared the 2013 “Zelda” headline, adding, “Good riddance.” Leigh Wolf posted the 2015 “I’m a pedophile, but not a monster” headline and wrote, “You’re telling me this model didn’t work out?”

The satirical outlet Not the Bee wrote, “Honestly this will be a big loss for us. Some the craziest lunatic left wing nonsense was sourced here. Now we just have Rolling Stone, CNN and the AP.”

Sharing the 2015 “White men must be stopped” headline, Melissa Chen commented, “You need to understand that the views published in Salon are not contained. They are thriving in Congress, universities, entertainment and corporate America.”
