A wave of resignations is hitting the New York Police Department (NYPD), breaking records in the process, just as crime rates in the city are spiking with no end in sight.
The reasons for this sudden exodus are clear: Democrats and their allies in the liberal media have been demonizing and disrespecting police officers for over three years now. Our elected officials have failed to show the NYPD any respect, and when officers try to do their job, they are accused of being racists and murderers. It’s no wonder that they’re fleeing the department in droves.
According to The New York Post, the numbers are staggering: “The NYPD staffing emergency is approaching the point of no return,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. “The shocking stats show 239 officers tapped out in January and February, a 36% spike from the 176 who fled in the same period last year and a disturbing 117% jump from the 110 in 2021, NYPD pension data show.” This is the highest number of resignations for the first two months of a year since 250 members quit in 2007 during a contentious contract dispute.
Breitbart News has also reported that “at the current rate, 1,400 cops are projected to resign this year before qualifying for retirement – even more than last year’s record 1,297 early exits.” Officers are leaving the force not only because leaders do not know how to manage personnel, but also because of anti-cop politics and leftist bail reform policies, which have wreaked havoc on the area.
A veteran Manhattan cop, speaking to The New York Post, said that “it’s not just politics and poor pay. Precinct cops are being forced to work an inhumane amount of overtime, including on their days off, while being penalized for minor uniform and administrative infractions. Meanwhile, precincts barely have enough personnel to meet the minimum required to safely answer 911 calls.”
New Yorkers are feeling the impact of the police exodus, with major crimes in the city increasing by 22 percent. “New Yorkers describe the return of ‘the bad old days’ as major crimes increase 22% in New York City,” Breitbart News reported. Criminals know that there will be no serious penalties for their crimes, so they do whatever they want.
This sorry state of affairs is the direct result of the Democrat Party’s relentless attacks on law enforcement. The party has consistently sided with criminals over police officers, making it impossible for the latter to do their job effectively. Meanwhile, cities across the country are seeing similar spikes in crime rates, with law-abiding citizens paying the price for Democrats’ misguided policies.
It’s clear that something needs to be done to address this crisis and fast. The NYPD needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, and anti-police policies need to be reversed. Until that happens, New York City residents will continue to live in fear, and criminals will continue to run amok.
