An infamous figure once basking in liberal leniency after being pardoned from a life sentence is back under the spotlight, trading his celebrity status for the chilling accusation of attempted murder.
On a grim note, Alton Mills, a former dealer of the insidious drug, crack cocaine, finds himself back in the jaws of the law. Aged 54, Mills was granted a reprieve from his life sentence by none other than former President Obama in 2015. His newfound freedom is marred with allegations of attempted murder, following a shooting incident involving a woman on a Chicago expressway.
Mills now faces the weight of three separate charges of attempted murder. These stem from accusations that he discharged his firearm at a female passenger in a car journeying on the I-57 on-ramp in the state of Illinois. It’s a sobering tale of the apparent failure of liberal leniency towards convicts, leaving victims in its wake.
Sadly, the woman targeted in this alleged crime clings to life in critical condition, as confirmed by local law enforcement who have declared her brain dead. The outcome of a lenient decision taken by the Obama administration has spiraled into a tragic narrative.
Rewinding to the past, Mills was shackled with a 22-year sentence due to his involvement in a crack cocaine conspiracy. Yet, he was chosen as a recipient of clemency by Obama in 2015, setting the stage for this grim sequel.
7 years after Obama commuted Alton Mills’ life sentence, the 54-year-old is now accused of shooting a woman on an expressway in Chicago this week. The victim is brain dead and not expected to survive. Sen Dick Durbin said Mills was “an overlooked casualty in our ‘war on drugs.’” pic.twitter.com/CYexzDgV3K

According to a report by NBC 5 Chicago:
“A suburban man, Alton Mills, whose federal life sentence was commuted by then-President Obama in 2015, stands accused of three counts of attempted murder. This stems from a recent shooting on Interstate 57.
The 54-year-old resident of Evergreen Park is held without bond at the Cook County Jail, as per the Illinois State Police statement released on Friday. Mills was taken into custody for a shooting that transpired on Sunday near the I-57 northbound entrance ramp from 147th Street in Posen, say the authorities.
From the suspect’s vehicle, multiple shots were reportedly fired into the victim’s vehicle. This resulted in the back seat passenger suffering life-threatening injuries and subsequently being rushed to a nearby hospital.”

In a stark contrast to his present situation, following his release by Obama, Mills was welcomed and celebrated in the Capitol as a celebrity.
Furthermore, the Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren penned a lengthy tribute in honor of his release. She portrayed him as a non-violent offender, lauding him as a shining example of rehabilitation.
In the aftermath of this serious crime, a deafening silence resounds from Obama and the Democrats who championed Mills’ release. Their voices, so vociferous in his favor during his release, remain conspicuously absent in addressing this violent incident.
