In the vast, open sea where tranquility is expected, a lone fisherman found himself locked in a nerve-wracking battle against a predator from the deep.
The fisherman found himself inches away from a fatal disaster when a gigantic shark attacked his kayak. Caught in a surreal moment that could have easily been a scene from the movie ‘Jaws,’ this angler had his own ‘one that got away’ tale, but this one he was grateful for.
Scott Haraguchi, an adventurous soul, was engaged in his regular fishing routine on a tranquil Friday afternoon off the coast of Hawaii. What began as a peaceful solitary voyage turned into a spine-chilling thriller in the middle of the sea, more than a mile away from Kualoa. An enormous tiger shark lunged at Scott’s kayak, its deadly jaws gnashing just inches away from him. Thanks to a twist of fate, the terrifying episode was captured in its raw, intense entirety by a GoPro camera Scott had fortuitously left on.

Having recently hooked a fish, Scott had intended to turn off the camera but in the excitement, he forgot. As it turns out, this fortunate blunder allowed for the recording of the life-altering encounter. The forty-two-second clip that ensued, capturing the harrowing ordeal, quickly made waves across the internet, leaving viewers agape.

The video unveils a placid scene where Scott’s yellow kayak, strewn with fishing paraphernalia, gently cleaves through the sparkling blue waters on Oahu’s windward side. Oblivious to the impending terror, Scott busies himself with his fishing gear amidst the rustling of the wind. For a moment, the calm oceanic expanse is a picture of serenity.
But tranquility quickly morphs into terror. As the camera unintentionally pans up, a monstrous, dark silhouette becomes discernible underwater, rapidly closing in on the kayak. Just as the audience struggles to identify the ominous figure, it strikes the vessel with an alarming force. The predator, a colossal tiger shark, reveals itself as it brutally bites the kayak, leaving distinct, savage teeth marks. Scott’s scream of fear and surprise reverberates as he yells, “Tiger shark rammed me!”

Miraculously, quick thinking saves the day. Scott bravely nudges the menacing beast away using his shoe, targeting the shark’s sensitive eye region. What could have been a life-ending scenario merely ends with a heart-thumping memory for Scott, who amazingly continues his fishing even after the monstrous creature retreats.
In the adrenaline-fueled aftermath, the true gravity of the situation only dawns upon Scott when he watches the footage back home. He recounts his experience, “I heard a whooshing sound that sounded like a boat heading towards me without the motor and I looked up and I saw this big brown thing. My brain thought it was a turtle, but then I got slammed by it and realized that it was a tiger shark.”

Scott speculates on the possible trigger for this attack, recalling a sight he came across post-incident, a possibly injured seal. He suspects that his kayak was mistaken by the shark for its wounded target that it intended to kill.
The video was made available to the public through Hawaii Nearshore Fishing’s YouTube channel, revealing the details of Scott’s miraculous escape. Messages overlaying the video express his relief, “Dunno how I did that, but my foot actually pushes the shark off near its vulnerable eye. Thank you, Jesus!”
Scott further contemplates his reflexive action, stating, “Happened so fast. Didn’t realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark’s head off with it. If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don’t think I’d have that flexibility.”
In light of this experience and subsequent reports of a 20-foot shark sighted near Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Scott admits his unease about solo fishing expeditions and resolves to always have a companion on his fishing trips.
Surviving this harrowing brush with death, Scott is profoundly grateful for his luck, understanding how tragically different the outcome could have been. He reflects on his surreal encounter and the life lesson it bore, “I realize that life is short, time is short on Earth, so make the most of it.”
