In an astonishing display of hypocrisy, Democrats halted voting on their own bill package, showcasing their desperation to maintain control and revealing the true face of their so-called commitment to democracy.
The so-called defenders of democracy resorted to cheating to avoid a humiliating loss on their own bill package, HB 4250-4252.
The proposed bills would not only ban holding or using mobile devices while driving but also impose harsher penalties for violations and permit license suspension for multiple offenses. Furthermore, they would criminalize receiving text messages while driving and allow for driver’s license suspension after just three offenses. In an absurd move, the Democrats sought to outlaw phone-based GPS, making it legal only if integrated into the vehicle.
The shameless Democratic handout to the insurance industry does nothing but harm American citizens. Michigan already criminalizes “distracted driving” and suffers from the highest automotive insurance rates in the nation. Despite their slim majority in both the House and State Senate, Democrats continue to push through radical bills, often with token Republican support.

In an act of betrayal, four Republicans sided with the Democrats on this bill package. Meanwhile, at least nine Democrats voted ‘no’ before the voting was suspended. During the bill’s time in the Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure Committee, four other Republicans also supported the package.
Rumors are circulating that Republican Leader Matt Hall has been trading moderate Republican votes for favors from the Democratic leadership. After complaining about unfulfilled backroom deals, Hall was accused of lining up voters for the Democrats on this particular bill. Discontent with Hall’s constant wheeling and dealing, several Republicans are considering replacing him with Rep. Bryan Posthumus as Minority Leader.
Interestingly, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights opposed the bill package. As the voting took place, Democrat leader Puri was seen arguing with House Speaker Joe Tate, likely facing pressure to vote ‘yes.’ With nothing added to the voting agenda without the Speaker’s consent, this incident highlights a significant failure in House leadership.
The Democrats, unable to secure the necessary votes, turned off the voting board and adjourned for the day. The ten Democrats who voted against the bill, including some of the chamber’s most liberal members, refused to sell out their voters by opposing the criminalization of GPS.

Conservative Champion Rep. Neil Friske criticized the Democrats, saying, “The Democrats have abused their power by speeding bills through without committee hearings, shutting down dissident voices, and kicking political opponents off committees. Now that they’ve finally failed at pushing their agenda, they can’t win their own caucus over and shut down the voting board to hide their shame? This is absurd.”
Although rare, this isn’t the first instance of votes being suspended mid-vote. In the 1930s, corrupt Democrat Louisiana Governor Huey Long installed a switch in his office to cut power to either chamber if he was losing a vote.
The biased left-wing media, exemplified by reporters Craig Mauger, Jonathan Oosting, and Clara Hendrickson, have remained silent on the Democrats’ shameful suspension of the vote on their own bills.
