Nail biting always seemed like a pretty innocuous bad habit, as bad habits go. It might leave a person with raggedy nails, but if it isn’t hurting anyone, then what’s the big deal, right?
Well, one mom has ruined any ideas of nail-biting being a harmless and inoffensive habit since she posted a viral video of herself pulling dozens of tiny fingernails out of her son’s gums with a pair of tweezers.
Sara Guidry, like many of you, is a parent with a child fond of biting nails. However, she comes forward with some warning news that should help parents check their kid’s oral status especially if they bite their nails.
Her son Kale complained of his hurting gums. As a mother, she decided to check what could be the problem. She reached for a flashlight and examined the status of the hurting gums.
They looked a bit inflamed. Then Sara saw something that seemed to be planted inside the gums. And she knew that was not normal. So, she grabbed her tweezers from the bathroom cupboard and then pulled out a fingernail…
Sara shared her story so that other parents are aware of the potential damage that nail biting can cause. In all, Sara pulled out 27 fragments of fingernail from Kale’s mouth!
“I get a tweezer and pull it. It looked like a fingernail. I continued to pull 4 more out. I then search his mouth and find another area. I pulled around 27 out of the second spot. YES 27!”
It is strange that the boy had this many inside his mouth. And the reason was a strange one, but the dentist explained it to the mom and her son.
“We figured out that Kale bites his nails and plays with them in his mouth. He pushes them up towards his pallet. The nail penetrates the skin and goes into a pocket between the baby teeth and permanent teeth. Don’t let your children bite their nails!”
