A recently turned 18-year-old Virginia teen claimed that her father made his final child support payment by delivering 80,000 pennies to her family’s front yard.
In a report by the Washington Post, Avery Sanford was inside her house when her dad, with whom she hasn’t talked in years, pulled up in a trailer and left thousands of pennies on their lawn.
“I just turned 18. When I was in the middle of class, my dad came by. He had rented a trailer,” Avery told WTVR.
“He pulled up in front of the house and turned the trailer on so it dumped out all the pennies on the grass and my mom came out and was like, ‘What are you dumping in my yard?’” Avery said. “She didn’t know who it was until he shouted, ‘It’s your final child support payment.’”
According to a video of the incident given by Safe Harbor Shelter with the mother’s permission, the father is seen making the delivery on May 21, just a few days before his daughter Avery Sanford was scheduled to graduate from Deep Run High School.
“It’s upsetting that he didn’t consider that before he did that,” Sanford added, saying that her dad was not just “trying to embarrass” her mother, but her and her sister as well.
The adolescent described the stunt as “upsetting,” but she insisted that they decided to turn a bad situation into a positive one.
She was going to use it to help “moms and children in need” by giving the money.
They counted up the pennies and donated the $800 to Safe Harbor, a domestic abuse organization.
“Turning around and donating that money to moms and children in need, I feel like that really turns this situation into a positive,” Sanford said.
