The mother of the Texas teen killer who murdered 19 children and two teachers said she was “surprised” that her son Salvador Ramos, who “wasn’t a violent person,” was behind the horrific massacre.
Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot and killed by police after killing 21 people at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday afternoon.
Nineteen children and two teachers were among those killed, with six people still fighting for their lives in hospital.
Adriana Reyes admitted that her son was a loner who “kept to himself and didn’t have many friends,” but she denied that she didn’t get along with him.
She did not address claims that she was a drug addict or that her son had left to live with his grandmother, Celia Gonzalez, whom he later shot before going on his murderous rampage at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School.
Reyes told the Daily Mail from the bedside of Gonzalez (66), who is recovering from being shot in the face by her grandson:
“My son wasn’t a violent person. I’m surprised by what he did.
“I pray for those families. I’m praying for all of those innocent children, yes I am. They [the children] had no part in this.”
She added about her son: “I had a good relationship with him. He kept to himself; he didn’t have many friends.”
She said she last spoke to him on Monday, his birthday, and that she had a card and a Snoopy stuffed animal for him.
After a falling out with his mother, the suspect had been living with his grandparents after dropping out of school due to bullying, according to classmates.
Rolando Reyes, Ramos’ 72-year-old grandfather, said his grandson’s actions “still haven’t sunk in.”
He slept on a mattress on the floor, his grandfather said.
According to Mr. Reyes, the suspect had a minor disagreement with his grandmother over the payment of a phone bill, but nothing major.
He claimed there were no signs anything unusual was going to happen the morning of the shooting.
Ramos shot and wounded his grandmother at her home on Tuesday morning, then fled. When she staggered outside and saw she had been shot in the face, her neighbors called 911, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Travis Considine.
Ramos then crashed his truck through a railing on the school grounds, injuring an officer from the Uvalde school district, Considine said.
