Even though she was paying for a customer’s purchase with her last dime, she had no idea that it was going to work out so well in her favor.
There are times when Good Samaritans are the last person that anyone would think of. This is one story, and it involves an individual working at Walgreens who was willing to part with their last $20 in order to help a person in need. Rita Burns is an ordinary woman, but she has now become a viral sensation after she offered to pay for a customer’s items even though she only had $20 to her name.
Her amazing gesture happened during a warm afternoon on September 7, 2021. Rita was behind the counter assisting customers with their checkout needs when a customer named Rina Liou was next in line but she quickly realized that she didn’t have enough money to pay for the items in her cart. This is when Rita opened her heart and revealed that she truly had one of gold.
It was a heartwarming interview with KHOU that Rina Liou explained that she was in a total rush when she realized that things weren’t quite right. That is when Rita made her day by covering her expenses when it was Liou’s turn at the counter.
“I’m just going to make a dash to Walgreens. And I never go there. I go there, and I get my light bulbs. And when I went to pay, my heart just sank.”
You see, this was when Rina realized that she had accidentally grabbed her husband’s phone instead of the wallet. Yes, she knew that she had the Apple Pay app, but she had never quite figured out how to work it. She was desperately doing that while she was in line, but she still hadn’t figured it out.
When Rita realized that Rina Liou was struggling to pay she offered to cover the bill without even giving it a second thought. This was on top of Ms. Rita keeping her bills paid that day and being left with only that twenty-dollar bill in her account. Even though she wouldn’t have any money for a cup of coffee later that day, she went ahead and gave away that twenty to her customer that was in need.
“I just looked up at God and said, I guess I’m going to do it,” Ms. Rita said.
Like everyone else, Rina Liou appreciated this gesture. She could have gone on her merry way, but she was not willing to let Rita’s act of kindness go unnoticed. She returned to that Walgreens later, giving her a bunch of flowers and a note of thanks for this kind woman. Rina Liou also shared a post about this on social media.
Rita Burns has worked at this Walgreens since 2016, but she has built a reputation for not just being a Walgreens employee, but also a huge asset in that Houston neighborhood.
“The true reward is seeing somebody else smile and they’re happy, and it puts a smile on your face. And you know, if I can make someone feel better with $20, then why not? It was worth it.”
Rita’s selfless act is proof that there is still plenty of good in the human species, and that is why a fund for Ms. Rita was started that has already raised $20,000. Good for her!
