As I reached my 40th year on Earth earlier this year, as most people do, I looked back to the things that I had done in my life.
For a few of those forty years, I served proudly in the United States military. I was a navy man, and like so many of my brothers and sisters that served on naval vessels, I was spared the gory visuals of what was happening on the ground.
That doesn’t mean that they didn’t make it to my ears from Marines that were attached to the ship I was stationed on during post watch trips to the smoke deck for a restless night of sleep before reveille the next morning.
Being from the small town that I was from and for nearly the first year that I was in the military being either at basic training or some kind of school, I didn’t actually have that much time to keep tabs on current events. Who the President of the United States was, the previous day’s snowfall back home, and who the WWF Champion was were about as up-to-date on current events as I was. I couldn’t tell you the best picture winner from those years if you put a gun to my head.
I tell you all this to make the point that when September 11th happened, and I first heard the word ‘Taliban’, I had no clue what in the hell people were talking about. They may as well have been saying ‘paper airplane’ to me. It was only after we deployed to the Middle East that I began learning of some of the horrors that these monsters engaged in.
Things that we take for granted in the most literal definition of the word were considered great sins to these people. Women wanting to go to school. That was the one that always got to me, like with my mother, who in her thirties and with three kids ranging from nine to thirteen years old got a two-year degree at a local community college in order to help add to the family income, would have been someone immediately executed by the Taliban.
I never totally understood the motivations of the Taliban, although it seems on the surface to the average person watching back in the United States that they want to scare people to their line of thinking.
They are monsters, plain and simple. Now, they are telling people that have the right to come to the United States “sure, you can get into the airport and go to America….you just have to get through us”. It is sickening and barbaric of a horrific nature the likes of which the world has not seen in decades. They are causing people to act in such a frantic manner on the wrong side of the gate of that airport that things are happening like this…
Now, after watching that, ask yourself this…would any reasonable and sensible person give two hoots about the feelings of people that would allow something like this to happen?
