The purported aunt of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has thrown a monkey wrench into the New York Democrat’s narrative about some of the troubles in Puerto Rico, including the fact that surprise! surprise! Donald Trump is not the one to blame for the troubles that the island has been going through.
A Visit To Her Grandmother
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently visited her grandmother, and she posted a photo of her abuela’s home in a terrible state of disrepair after Hurricane Maria totally dismantled the island in 2017. Although AOC initially blamed Trump for blocking the relief funds for the island, more information is coming down the pike that is showing that this simply isn’t the case.
“Just about a week ago, my abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her, and it was the first time in a year due to COVID,” AOC began. “This is her home. Hurricane Maria relief is still yet to arrive, and it’s because Trump blocked the relief money for Puerto Rico.”
AOC wasn’t content to just leave it with just those comments. She proceeded to hurl accusations at President Trump: “In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the Trump Administration had overseen two key items: first, they were handing millions in public funds to an unqualified donor (Whitefish). The other thing they did was to impose some extremely difficult eligibility rules, thereby allowing a tremendous mass rejection of recovery fund applications,” AOC alleged.
However, there is more to this story. Apparently, a reporter from the Daily Mail tracked down the house that belongs to Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother, and when the reporter went to this house to interview the family members, he was approached by an individual claiming to be Ocasio-Cortez’s aunt.
And yes, surprise, surprise, that same person even rebuffed Ocasio-Cortez’s claims that Trump is at fault for the difficult conditions in Puerto Rico.
From the Daily Mail:
And when we [the reporters] politely approached the two-story flat-roofed residence, we were met by a woman who told us emphatically after viewing AOC’s tweets: “I am her aunt. We don’t speak for the community.” The relative, who refused to give her name, added: “We are private people, we don’t talk about our family.” Ironically and awkwardly for AOC, she also refused to blame former President Donald Trump for thousands of Hurricane Maria victims being unable to get money to repair shattered homes.
As a matter of fact, Washington did indeed deliver relief aid, but according to the aunt, it didn’t reach the people who desperately need it. “It’s a problem here in Puerto Rico with the administration in Washington and how the help was distributed. It was not a problem with Washington itself. We had the assistance; it just didn’t get to the people.” Go back and read that again. Trump delivered the funds; the people just didn’t get it.
Of course, the Democrats have continually tried to blame President Trump for these relief problems, but the issues with corruption and misappropriated relief were well-documented with most of the people. First of all, the head of the island’s emergency management services had his position terminated after an entire warehouse full of unused disaster relief items was discovered. Meanwhile, the offices of now-former San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz was raided. This man became rather well-known for being a vocal critic of President Trump, yet he wasn’t doing much better than he was.
Interestingly enough, it appears that the conservatives not only have more common sense than the liberals, but they are also better at beating them at their own game. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh utilized his radio program to raise more than $100,000 after AOC said that her grandmother was in dire straits, but the family wouldn’t take it. “Someone in AOC’s abuela’s family said that she is not going to take the money, even though AOC had previously claimed that her grandma was in an emergency situation and it was all Trump’s fault.”
This is definitely interesting, to say the least. What do YOU think? Feel free to share your opinions!
