The Biden Administration continues to have problems at the U.S.-Mexican border, and they have now gotten so severe that one Texas Democrat (you read that right: DEMOCRAT) is beginning to call out his party’s leadership following the litany of complaints he has received from law enforcement officers and other residents in his district.
Representative Henry Cuellar is an American with Mexican heritage who has been overseeing Texas’ 28th Congressional District since 2005, and he joined MSNBC last Thursday to discuss the border policies of the Democrats. Surprise, surprise, the man is not pleased.
As a matter of fact, the man called on his own party to start getting serious about their border policies, saying that they should deport illegal border crossers, even if that is a prospect that makes people “uncomfortable.” This comes on the heels of U.S. Customs and Border Protection announcing that their encounters with illegal immigrants had reached a 20-year-high as of last May.
“The incentives are there for the smugglers to keep trying to get these people across; that’s because they make six to $8,000 per person,” Representative Cuellar said to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“It really doesn’t matter whether it’s drugs or people. They have made billions and billions of dollars over the years, and we need to understand that if we don’t take this incentive away we are going to be having this same discussion year after year.”
Cuellar went ahead and took a few shots at the influx of illegal immigration, and he said that even in the warmer months the increase was only due to bad policy.
“With all due respect, the only thing that this administration talks about is how they’re handling the unaccompanied kids, but that’s just one thing,” he said. “I’m glad that they are trying harder with this group, but what about the other people? What about all of the adults that are coming in alone? We should talk about that too.”
“We are always talking about Central America, Mexico, Guatemala and the other countries about how to do the things, the dirty things, that we don’t want to do. These are all uncomfortable things, and one of them is to deport people. Whether we like it or not, we’ve got to enforce the law, and that means deporting the people that aren’t supposed to be here. It’s just plain and simple.”
Cuellar then called on both President Biden and Vice President Harris to come visit his district, but he also was careful to say that he didn’t want the visit in what he called a “staged” manner.
“A staged visit is not enough,” he continued to emphasize. “This is the bottom line: We here on the border believe in legal migration, it’s only illegal migration that we are against,” Cuellar continued. The Texas Democrat said that he also feels that one of the main reasons why Democrats seem skittish on enforcing the country’s immigration laws is because they don’t want to offend immigration activists.
Cuellar also took a moment to call out Harris’ photo-op trips to Mexico and Central America this week. While the Democrat did thank her for visiting those areas, he suggested that such visits are meaningless if no action has been taken, and no, nothing has been done.
“While I do want to thank the vice president for having a clear message: ‘Don’t come’, I also hope she realizes that we need to couple that with some action and some repercussions, because we need to show people being returned, otherwise it isn’t going to be coupled with some of the work that we do,” Cuellar added.
Cuellar isn’t doing this because he is facing tough reelection prospects either. Cuellar defeated GOP challenger Sandra Whitten by 19 points last November, so it doesn’t look like he is calling out the White House because of facing a stiff challenge in his next reelection.
On the other hand, it seems apparent that the policies of the Biden Administration have been so detrimental to Cuellar’s district that even he wants to see some reform.
What do you think about this gentleman going against his own party to call out the Biden team? Feel free to comment on this!
