A suspected drunken driver reportedly went back to his burning car and tried lighting his cigarette using the flames from the crashed car.
Amy Walker with the CHP on a statement said Robert Quigley, 25-years-old, rear-ended an SUV that was stopped in traffic on westbound of Interstate 80 just west of Antelope Road.
An incident report says Quigley was driving around 75 to 80 mph.
A CHP officer who was around the area of incident spotted the occurrence and turned around in traffic to help. As he got closer to the place of the event, he spotted the driver switch seats with his female passenger for a still unknown reason – but he later admitted to the investigating officer that he was the one driving behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
Reports also say that a witness who was in the same area told the authorities that the driver, Quigley, was shirtless and went back to his burning car to light his cigarette – singeing part of his eyebrows off in the process, according to the witness’ detailed statement.
Quigler when questioned about the incident told the attending officer at the crash scene, “Yeah, I’m not afraid of fire. I deal with this kind of stuff all the time.”
CHP Amy Walker said the driver, Quigley, sustained a burn on his neck from his seatbelt. Thankfully, no one else was reported injured in the crash.
According to reports, Robert Quigley has been charged on suspicion of driving under the influence. He has been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
Records show that this is the second the the drunken driver has been picked up for a DUI charge during the week after a CHP from Grass Valley stopped him during a separate incident. No one was reported injured on the first incident.
